Sanitary Pads Programme
This is mainly targeting the young girls and women who cannot afford to buy sanitary towels/pads. they are trained on how to make the sanitary pads from locally available materials. The training is conducted in various institutions such as schools, churches and the community level.
The home made sanitary pads manufactured by the organization are donated to institutions like schools in the rural areas and slums and also orphans homes. A majority of the school going teenage girls especially from poor family backgrounds usually do not go to school when they are menstruating. This is mainly due to lack of sanitary pads.
The problem therefore adversely affects their academic performance. The organization trains such teenagers on how to make hand made sanitary pads from locally available materials. The training has had a positive impact on such teenagers who are now able to make their own sanitary pads.
The training involves practical group discussions that is covered in three areas mainly
A. Introduction to menstruation period
Topics covered include:-
- Menstruation process and its effects on adolescence
- Stress management during menstruation
- Hygiene during menstruation
- Menstruation cycle & qualities of good menstrual
- Painful period, cramps and discomfort management
B. Sanitary pads making process
- Material used in making the sanitary pads
- Steps involved in making the sanitary pads
- Safety and hygiene standards while making the sanitary pads
C. Sanitary pads disposal management
- Sanitary pads disposal & effects on the environment
- Cultural beliefs on the use and disposal of sanitary pads
- Awareness on good practices in sanitary pads disposal
